Staff at Delcam’s Korean joint venture, Hankook Delcam, had plenty to celebrate at their 2010 User Group Conference, the 21st of these annual events to be held by the company. With over 900 delegates, technical partners and staff in attendance at the Kyeong-ju Hyundai Hotel on 3rd and 4th September, the Conference is expected to be this year’s largest meeting of CAM users anywhere in the world. It comes at a time when software sales in Korea are up by more than 60% over last year’s figures.
One of the highlights was a presentation to Hankook Delcam’s 1,500th customer, Hanmi Semiconductor, by Martin Uden, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea. Since being founded 30 years ago, Hanmi Semiconductor has grown into a US$ 60 million turnover company, with over 200 international customers. It has recently ordered 30 seats of the FeatureCAM feature-based CAM system as part of a major expansion of the business.
Customer presentations on successful applications of Delcam’s software were also well received. Suk-won Song from LG Electronics showed how the use of PowerSHAPE and ArtCAM had allowed his company to incorporate more artistic designs into its phone cases. The first example of this new approach was the "Waffle” phone launched earlier this year.
He was followed by Dong-jae Lim of SL Corporation, who described the applications of PowerMILL for five-axis machining at his company. SL Corporation is a first-tier supplier to Hyundai and many other car manufacturers where moving to five-axis machining has improved mould quality, in particular surface finish, and reduced delivery times.
Of course, the Conference also included details of all the latest developments in the complete range of Delcam software, from the established products for advanced manufacturing to the newer software for the healthcare industry. In his opening address, Hankook Delcam President, Mr. C.O. Jeong, emphasised the importance of this key technology for all manufacturing companies and its role in maintaining Korea’s competitiveness as the global recovery takes place.
In addition to the high levels of investment in product development at Delcam, the continued success at Hankook Delcam can be attributed to the high levels of support provided to its customers. As with the previous downturn in the late 1990s, Mr Jeong has maintained the largest CADCAM support team in Korea over the current crisis. This ensured that his customers could have the highest levels of support when they needed it most and are well placed to benefit from the current recovery in business.
